Efavirenz is used along with other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Efavirenz is not a complete cure for HIV but may reduce chances of getting AIDS. Efavirenz belongs to a class of medication called non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs). It prevents the HIV from multiplying in the blood and thus reducing chances of getting HIV related illnesses, including serious infections.
